These are the examples of our font type for our company name.

Ideas:

We have chosen both of these because we want the writing to look a little bit fancy so it does not look too plain and boring to look at. And we want to keep it with our theme of romance genre like the top one which has got a heart on letter "I" and the colour pink which means romantic and charming. 

Final:

We decided as a group that we would use the last one because its clearer and its more fancy writing because the other one is just basic and we don't really want it to look too romance.

Our Company Logo

This is the final image of our company logo.

We have chosen this because it's simple and it goes with the subject of our romance genre. We combined black and pink because they fit in together and it looks sophisticated. Pink signifies as romantic and charming. It didn't take us too long to make this logo because we just find a picture, took out some parts that we did not want on Photoshop then add our used the fonts that we wanted to use for our company name.

We came up with these ideas because we want it to look simple and that would go with our theme of romance genre. We discussed in our group that we should combine the ring and the film reel for our final one then add each letters of our company name on each of the boxes and productions at the bottom on the side of the film reel.

Preliminary Task

We have to undertake a continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with who he/she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. 

Evaluation

Write about the Preliminary task. What were asked to do? How did you find each stage of the process?

• First I took a long shot of a person walking down the corridor. Then I used a close up shot to show the match on action rule and to see which hand he was using. When both of them were having a conversation, I used a shot reverse shot when the other person was sat in a chair opposite to the other person. By doing this, it should show the continuity task that we were asked to do. 
• After filming it, I edited the short clips that I filmed and put it all together in a large video by using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. I make sure that the timing between a person walking down the corridor and opening the door should match. 
  

Things that I learnt during the preliminary task:

• Is to make sure that the camera is steady and running smoothly while filming
• I learned how to edit small clips and make it into a whole video
• Is to check and make sure that the microphone is now seen on the video

• I did not laugh while I was acting 
• I did not get the microphone in the video
• I did well while I was editing the clips

I could improve my preliminary task by making sure that the camera is steady and running smoothly while panning in filming

Yes it would because I could use the editing software after filming and I could possibly use the shots and rules that I learnt during this task.

During the recording our narration

This is where we record our narration for our 2 minute film opening. Hayley's voice is the one that we are going to record as she is the main character. After she has finished recording, Rachael and I were listening to her voice to see if it's good quality or not.

Costumes

Scarlett's Costume:
Because she's dying her hair will be loose and down because the important thing is whether she will recover from illness or not. If we put her covered in make up and really nice clothes, the audience wouldn't be able to put any answers to any questions that may be uncovered in the first minute or so and we want the audience to think what is going to happen to her. She will be also wearing grey and white scarf and brown ankle boots. Grey signifies the lack of character and it emphasizes neutrality.

Scarlett will be wearing quite light and white clothing to show her purity and innocence, as she's dying because it's not her fault

Brown means to convey a feeling of warmth, honesty and wholesomeness.

Tom's Costume:

Tom will look like a normal everyday guy because they are just an everyday couple. To show that he is an everyday character he will be dressed in normal clothes for example jeans and a hoody with white trainers which will show through his characteristics to be pure and innocence like Scarlett. He will be wearing dark colour jumpers to show the dark side of him.

Storyboard

This is just the ideas that we might want in our film. 

This is our main ideas for our 2 minute film opening.

Extreme long shot/establishing shot – to introduce the characters, and to show who the main protagonists are going to be and also the location of where the film opening is going to be set

Shot reverse shot – to show the expressions on each of the protagonists faces when they are about to break the news to each other and it can see the reactions on each others faces after the other person has said something.

Extreme close up – of the hands separating before Hayley leaves the park, and this shows the intimacy between the main protagonists

Long shot – this is to show how lonely Tom is once Hayley has walked away and the audience are left thinking what is he going to do now?

We have chosen these shots because the close ups’ and extreme close up’s show the emotions on the faces of the characters, and can set the mood of the film and because it wouldn’t be appropriate if we used a long shot because you couldn't see the emotions properly.

Job Roles in our Group

Producer
We all agreed that Hayley Jacklin will be the producer because she is good at coordinating, supervising and controlling matters.  She is perfect for the job and will make sure that everything runs smoothly. She is good at making ideas,  protects, and consults the rest of the production crew. 


Director
Rachael Halstead will be the director because she is well organised, sensible, good memory and knows storyboarding well. She tells the actors what to do, ensures the sets are right, establishes the camera angles, controls the lighting and has a say in the editing. She is in total control outside administration things as well.

Camera Operator
I will be the camera operator because I know a lot about all the camera shots and techniques that we have been taught. I think I am responsible well enough for all aspects of camera operation, like to focus on lighting and overall visual style. I can ensure that the camera and equipments are prepared for the required set–ups, I always keeping alert for any last–minute changes. I can multi–task, and to watch, listen and think on my feet while carrying out complex technical tasks. I can suggest some improvements or alternatives. 


Sound Operator
Rachael Halstead will be the sound operator because this job is not hard to do and she is a sensible person. She can set up and operates the sound equipment for the audio in our production. She is responsible well enough to testing the sound and running the audio during the performance.

Job Roles In Film

Producer

A producer is someone who oversees the production from start to finish.  They have overall control on every aspect of the production bringing together the screenwriters, director, cast, finances and production team.

Director

The director is the driving creative force in a film’s production, and acts as the crucial link between the production, technical and creative teams. They are assisted by assistant directors who ensure that the director’s ambitions and achieved.

Camera operator

The camera operator or cameraman is a professional operator of a film or video camera. They are responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene or shot.

Sound operator

The sound operator or most commonly known as the audio engineer and the person is responsible for the overall and total execution of all sound related aspects of the film production. 

Locations

Ideas
We thought that we would set it at a field or a park in Bell Park or Ludford. We don't know which one just yet because we were not sure which one looks better to film at. When we got the pictures taken from both of them, we will then decide as a group. We are picky with our locations because we want to have a good looking scene so our film would not look rubbish. Because if we have like a messy scene like rubbish everywhere, it will make the audience not to watch it. We don't mind what the weather would be like because if it's raining then we could just make the casts use an umbrella, the male protagonist could hold it and share it with the female protagonist which will makes them look like a sweet couple.


Final Location

We have decided to set it at Bell Park in Market Rasen because the place is suitable for our film. The site was not that messy and it's got the things that we wanted. We thought that we would choose this location as it is closer to us and it would not be difficult for our group and the casts for the transportation. 

Characters and Casts Development

Who will play them? Why?
Hayley Jacklin will be playing the role as Scarlett Coles character because she is a good actress and she did GCSE Drama. She's going to do her best so our film will look good.

Tom Manson will be playing the role as Tom Smith because a lot of people said especially the Drama Department that he is a good actor.

We picked them as our two protagonists character because we know that they are both good at acting and they get along together so it won't be awkward for them to act. We also thought that we would choose them as it is easy to get hold for the both of them whenever we want to start filming because we all go to the same school so it wouldn't be hard to contact them. 


What is this character like? Why?

One of our protagonists is called Scarlett Cole, 20 years old and who is just a normal girl. She is an ambitious person in life and determined to work her way to the top. She is a happy character right at the start but it changed when she finds out that she’s dying and the problem she has got with her boyfriend. We are going to represent her as a normal person because then it shows that it could happen to anyone.  

The other main protagonist is Tom Smith who is just a normal boy too. We would portray him as good, loving and kind person at the beginning but he turns into an alcoholic person when he finds out that Scarlett is dying. This is to show the characteristic of a person when a problem like that comes up to someone else's life.

What will they look like? Why?

For the female protagonist, she will not wear any make-up towards the end as she is nearly dying. However, she may need just a little bit of make up at the start when she’s been hiding her problems, this is to make her boyfriend and the audience doesn’t notice it. She should wear white top for the clothing because it means purity, kindness and innocence which reflects on her character. And as for the male protagonist, he will be wearing something red because it signifies either love or aggression which will reflects on him as a character.We decided the characters to play as matured people like 20 years old for the female protagonist and a year older for the male protagonist because we want to aim it for teenager girls and older as well. Some older woman doesn't like watching teenagers as main characters but teenager girls does not bother whether the characters are teenagers or more matured age. 

BBFC

Who are the BBFC and what do they do?

BBFC stands for the British Board Of Film Classification. It is an independent, non-governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video works for classification. They will carry out its responsibilities through appropriate use of the classification categories, in order to protect children from any harm which may be caused. If necessary, however, the BBFC may cut or even reject a film or video work. Every film is classified by examiners using the published Guidelines.

What do they take into consideration?

Things that are taken into consideration are:

·                     Horror
·                     Imitable behaviour
·                     Language
·                     Nudity
·                     Sex
·                     Violence
Central to all of the above is the context in which they are presented. 

Examples of films that have been cut/banned and why

Human Centipede 2 and Grotesque as they were showing too much sexual torture and sexual violence and potential obscenity. Rebel Without a Cause was cut reduce the possibility of teenage rebellion. Smiles of a Summer Night was cut to remove overtly sexual or provocative language.

What certificate would your film get be? Be detailed, explain why (using the guidelines) and consider ‘context’.

I think that our film would be a 12 because there would be issues with the male protagonist showing alcohol abuse and violence which many people are offended by however we will not show this to a large extent. Also there would be expressions and gestures used to imitate language. Between the main two protagonists there will be the portrayal of sexual activity only ranging to kissing without the detail of real sex. Even though there are parts of 15 in this film opening its not enough to make it a 15 as we aren't showing it to a real extent. 

How have other, similar films from your genre been classified?
Love actually was a 15 certificate because it contains sex and nudity, violence and gore, moderate coarse language, alcohols and smoking which the part of alcohol and smoking is also included in our film idea.

Target Audience and Marketing

Target Audience
A target audience is a particular group of people, identified as the intended recipient of an advertisement or message. Also called target population.
My group and I decided that the target audience for our film would be mainly for teenage girl from the age of 12 and above or anyone one who likes romance film. When we did some research on the UK Film Council, it is mainly for females under 35 who likes romance but it is popular with the older females too. And for the social class it would be suitable from any categories because there is not a lot of difference according to the UK Film Council. 


Marketing

It depends if we have got enough budget for marketing our product. If we have, then I think that the best place to market our film would be on the internet by putting it as an ad on the side of the websites so people can see it, or by having our own website so they can look at it, or by making fan pages on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter because a large population of people uses it. We could advertise our film in the front page of magazine so it eye catches the target audience because a lot of woman reads magazine. Another way is to advertise it on TV about 6-10pm on the weekdays because some teenage girls are going to school and there's no point of advertising it when they can't see it. And on the weekends could be advertising it anytime. We can also advertise it on the cinema a few months before we release our film and we could advertise it on the billboards so a lot of people knows about it.  

Film Interview

I interviewed Alice because she loves romance films and I am making this genre of film with my group. She would suit in my target audience because she is 16 years old.


1. What is the main thing you want to see in a romance film? and why?

•  The cute lines that a guy says to a girl and then when they finally kiss because it makes you happy and mostly teenage girls likes soppy love films. 

2. What you wouldn't like to see in romance and other type of genre films? and why?

• Sick,gory films like the Human Centipede because there gross, make me feel sick and uncomfortable to watch. And in romance films, when it's too cheesy and to over the top because it makes you cringe and it's just too cheesy.

3. Why do you like romance film? and why?

• Because they can be cute, funny and they make me all happy.

4. Does romance mirror true life?and why?

• Sometimes. Depends if you're in love, if not every girl dreams of her love life.

5.What is your favourite romance film? and why?

• Love Actually because it shows different aspects of love and how hard it is too. 

Blurb for our Film

Young and enjoying life, 20 year old Scarlett Coles (Hayley Jacklin) has come to a point in her life when everything good is slowly falling apart. When Scarlett leaves her boyfriend Tom, he is left confused and wondering what secrets she has to hide. One situation could leave the couple torn apart, or maybe bring the two even closer together. Scarlett finds out what it takes to fall all over again.

Synopsis for our Film

Scarlett is an ambitious person in life and determined to work her way to the top. She seems to be happy a great deal of the time but right at the start she finds the need to tell her boyfriend something. One thing that she's been hiding from him all this time. 


The 20 year old reveals that she's not as happy as she really makes out to be. Underneath all her smiles and inside she's dying. She tells the truth that's been haunting her for months, which comes to feud between the couple. The two argue as to why she didn't tell him, but arguing can't change anything. If anything you'd think it would bring them closer together, well you'd be wrong. 


Her boyfriend Tom turns to alcohol as a result. He doesn't help the situation by doing this and chooses to abuse her under the influence of the drink he has on a regular basis. She's physically and mentally dying now Without his support there's not a lot that Scarlett can do. 


Through all her thoughts and struggles, Tom manages to overcome his addiction to alcohol and to look after her through every step of the way. But when he does decide to change, it's too late. Aged 20, Scarlett dies from a heart-stricken disease that's effected her for much time. Leukaemia gets the better of her. All that could be done, was done, and yet was not enough.

Popular Films by different genre's

As you can see the red circle in the picture, the index by month shows that New Moon and Twilight are one of the top five’s best-selling romance film. Also in the index by date shows quite a few different romantic films are on it, so the trend is that the best-selling film is romantic. And I believe that romance is a good genre to choose on picking the type of genre on this project.

Planning: 8 Key Questions

 1. Is it practical?
- Yes it is practical because my group and I know that we can do it. We get on well and we are well organised. I don’t think it is difficult for us to do the filming. 


2. Is it an idea that works to the strengths of the group?
- I think we have the strengths on our group because I like romantic films so as Rachael and Hayley likes it as well. We are all friends so I think the communication between us won’t be a problem. We all have different concepts and we share it to each other then decide if it is suitable to our genre or not. We are hard working group and make sure that things are well planned for this project.


3. Will it show off the skills you have learnt so far on the course?
- Yes  it will show the skills that we have learnt so far by using different camera techniques, angles and shots and the use of editing. For example, using close up shots to focus of the facial expressions on the characters more especially their happy, fun and the sad moments together. We would use different lightings as well depending on the mood of the characters. For example, low key lighting when it is depressing and high key lighting when they are happy and also natural lighting to show everyday life. We would use edits and transitions on our clips, like take out the stuff that is not wanted on our clips and make the two clips run smoothly.


4. Is it something you can reasonably shoot and edit in the time available?
- Yes I don’t think it will take a lot of time. We decided the first 1:30 minutes is going to be happy, fun and enjoying their life together. Then the last 30 seconds is when it goes downhill.


5. Can you get access to shoot in the chosen location at chosen time?
- Yes, we are using public location near to our school so it won't be difficult for the transportation.


6. Can you organise lighting in that location?
- Yes, we will be using natural and high key lighting. And we will edit any other lighting. 


7. Have you included dialogue? Will it work to shoot conversation in that location?
- No we haven’t yet but we are working on it, but the location will be suitable. We are thinking more of using narration to introduce the characters' story.


8. Do you have guaranteed, high quality, reliable actors to play the characters?
- Hayley Jacklin will be playing as our protagonist in our film but we're not sure just yet who will be playing the role as Tom Smith.

Analysis of Audience – Romance Genre

We did some research and analysed the data rom the UK Film Council for film audiences of our romance genre. As you can see from the photo below, it shows that there is a potentially huge market for us to target the audiences. Just over a quarter of cinema goers enjoy the genre (26% - pic 1, p.105) with 5% saying that it’s their favourite genre (pic 2 p.116). Looking at demographic data (p.106), it appears that I should be mainly aiming my product at females all aged under 35 (43%), although it is popular with females over 35 too. With regards to social class, there is very little difference between AB (27%), C1 (27%), C2 (25%), DE (24%) categories.

Ideas for 2 minute film opening

These are the ideas and themes that we came up with:

Pitch of 2 minute film opening

Our Pitch 
My group and I came up with two different themes for our 2 minute film opening and they pitched it in front of the class to get some feedback.


Synopsis of the 1ST Pitch
Our first idea was a romantic film. At the start of the film we would show the happiness and the memories they shared together as a couple. We we’re not sure with our characters yet if we are doing a couple or sisters or best friends. However, on the last part of our film opening, we thought that one of the characters is dying because she has got an illness and this will affect the relationship between them. 


Target Audience
The target audience for our film would be mainly for teenage girls from 12 years old but it could be for boys that wants to watch it as well. However, we thought that not a lot of boys like romance. 


Similar Films
Our film is quite similar to My Sister's Keeper because we got the idea from that film that one of the characters is dying and the narration of the main protagonist as well. We also got the idea from Love Actually when one of the character wrote the things that he/she wanted to say to another person on each cards.


Use of Micro elements (sound, mise-en-scene, lighting, camera, editing)
At the start of the film we thought of a music that is happy and lively to reflect on the characters emotions and then when things went wrong, we are going to change it into slow paced, low, soft and depressing music to make the audience feel the same way. We would use high key lighting at the start to reflect on the mood on our characters because they are happy and enjoying their life together and then low key at the end because she's dying and then it goes all sad. We would use cards, flowers, ring, chocolates, chairs and gift as props to make it look romantic. We would set it either on a house, restaurant or park but we are not sure just yet which one. We thought we would show their happy life together by using slideshow effects like flashbacks. I think we should use different camera movements like close up shots, when we want to focus on their happy expressions on the first minute and a half and a mixture of long shots and mid shots to show their body movements and also the location.   


Enigma
The enigma that is left to the audience are thinking how many months she’s got left? What type of illness she has got? What will happen to her/him at the end? What will happen to the other character when he/she finds out about it?


Synopsis of the 2ND Pitch
Our second idea was a street dance film. It is about a guy and a girl likes each other in a dance competition and something goes wrong but we are not sure just yet what the problem could be. At the first 20-30 seconds we would show the credits and introduce our main characters. And then the next minute is where the problem starts. 


Target Audience
Our target audience for this one is for both teenage boys and girls. However, we don’t know what could be the problem and how to fit it in for two minutes because we couldn't think of anything. It could also be for the people who enjoys watching street dance film. 


Similar Films
Our idea is similar to Honey and Step-up because we got the idea from there where two teams are competing each other and we got the idea of type on dance from there as well. 


Use of Micro elements
For the costume we came up with crop tops and trackies for the dancers or for cheerleaders are pleated skirts and crop tops. We would use high key lighting at the start to reflect their emotions of being in love and low key at the end when the conflict starts. The location could be in a dance studio or street. And the type of dance would be hip-hop or street.


Feedback
We got a good feedback from our class on the first pitch. However, we didn't get as much votes for the second pitch. When we had a vote in our class, a lot of people did not like the second idea. So we decided to do the first idea instead and we will improve on what we are going to do exactly and get into a lot of details and research informations to get some ideas.

Ideas for 2 minute film opening

Today, we came up with three different topics which were love triangle, relationship & problem and gangster. 

After that we started to look up on some websites to look for a music that is suitable for the themes that we thought of. 

Conventions of a Film Opening:

Enigma

What is an Enigma?

•  An enigma is a question that is left unanswered to create intrigue or suspense to the audience. The questions that can make the audience think will be like what happened next, who it was, when did it happened, where it was and how it happened. For example, a body is discovered right at the beginning of a drama this will make the audience think who is the killer and how the person did got killed. This will make them watch the drama more to find out the killer and to find out what’s the story behind it.
•  Sometimes it can be presented by the use of the speed shots like fast and quick shots shows that there will be danger.
• Also enigma can be presented by editing in a film like using jump cuts in the film opening to make the audience think what is happening and why is it done that way. Like the film called Se7en, the film opening is really scary and weird as there were fast jump cuts in the beginning with the titles that ware used were really creepy and the sound that was used was scary which made me think why was he underlining those words on a paper and who was that person that was doing it because I couldn't see the face of the person.

We want enigma for our 2 minute film opening to tease the audience by presenting a puzzle or riddles to be solved and this will make the audience wants to watch more to find out what’s going to happen next and to solve the mysteries that made them think right at the beginning of the film. This can also get us a higher grade if we use it in our film opening.

I am Khem Slawson, 16 years old and from De Aston School. I will be working with Rachael Halstead and Hayley Jacklin on this project. We decided to work with each other because we all have the same ideas and thoughts on genre of a film. We know each other because we all go to the same school. We all know each other well enough to work well and I think we will make as a good group. I am positive that we are a good group as we know each other well enough to communicate, sharing ideas and thoughts to each other, helping each other out and well organised.
